In this lesson, developed in partnership with Scholastic, students learn how the chemicals in marijuana affect the brain to produce a high. Worksheets, writing prompts and class activities help students analyze how marijuana is portrayed in the media.


The complete lesson includes a classroom poster and four lessons with critical thinking student worksheets, including:

  • Marijuana Facts: basic marijuana facts and how to use them to make informed decisions about marijuana use.
  • Consider the Source: the difference between a fact that can be verified and a personal opinion.
  • Think it Through: how to “read” and understand editorial cartoons.
  • Analyzing Media Messages: practice analyzing messages in media and understand how frequency of exposure can influence decision making.
