What is the most common drug?

The most common substance used by teens is alcohol. Roughly 30 percent of high school seniors reported using alcohol in the past month. The most common drug used by teens is marijuana. Both alcohol and marijuana can have negative effects on teenage brains that are still developing, especially when they are used heavily or often, so that's a big concern.

In the past couple of years, teens have started vaping nicotine and marijuana at alarming rates. There is still a lot we don’t know about the dangers of vaping, and some people have unexpectedly gotten very ill or have even died after vaping. While public health experts try to figure out what is causing the illnesses and deaths, teens should stay away from all vaping devices. Here are the latest rates of teen drug use from our Monitoring the Future Survey (of 8th, 10th and 12th graders): https://www.drugabuse.gov/related-topics/trends-statistics/monitoring-future.
