Vicki Ballas, MSUE SNAP-Ed Program Instructor, will be leading a “make your own energy ball” buffet bar, full of healthy and nutritious items to make a great winter hiking food (granola, dried fruit, maple syrup, etc.). Munising High School’s Key Club and Superior Central High School’s National Honor Society will be heading up the self-guided candlelit hike portion. We are leaving this part up to them primarily, with the caveats that it needs to include various drug and alcohol facts in some fashion. We wanted the teens to have ownership over this part of the event. We also have small prizes for this portion, with the idea we could do a self-guided quiz as well. We will also have a campfire and “hot cocoa with a cop”—Alger County’s deputy sheriff (and possibly the sheriff too!) will be hanging out and talking to families, and generally just showing that cops can be fun and not just “scary” people. We will also have a "Why you Matter" wall, where youth can write out reasons why they feel important, as a proactive, meaningful campaign to help build positive self-images within our community.
