If a pregnant woman takes drugs/smokes/drinks alcohol, what does it do to her baby?
Every drug a pregnant woman takes also reaches her baby. The ways in which the baby can be affected depends on the drug the mother takes, how much she uses, and when in pregnancy she uses. For example, women who use marijuana while pregnant are at higher risk for having a premature birth. Another example: You might have read in the news about babies born to mothers who are addicted to opioids, and then the babies have to go through a painful withdrawal. But the good news is that the sooner a pregnant woman stops using drugs, the better the results for her baby. Pregnant women who have a problem with drugs should ask for treatment help while they are still pregnant.
