Do you have a question about what drugs and alcohol can do to your body and brain? Or about the causes of addiction, or how to help someone you know who’s using drugs?

One day every year, you can ask some of the top scientific experts in the United States for an answer. National Drugs & Alcohol Chat Day is coming up on January 24, 2019.

NIDA coordinates National Drugs & Alcohol Chat Day in partnership with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Since Chat Day started in 2007, students have asked the scientists more than 100,000 questions.

How Chat Day works

  1. First, your high school needs to register to participate. Registrations are first-come, first-served and are limited to the first 100 high schools that sign up. (Visit the Chat Day Registration page.)
  2. On January 24, 2019, students can chat live with scientists between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST.  Scientific experts from the National Institute of Mental Health will also answer questions about depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues that can contribute to teen drug use.
  3. We’ll be live streaming Chat Day on Facebook Live all day, so you can follow the conversation in real time, even if your high school doesn’t register. Search for Chat Day on Facebook using the hashtag #NDAFW.
  4. If your question isn’t answered before your classroom time ends, check back when we post a transcript of the questions and answers, and search for your question with your user name.

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®

Chat Day is part of National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW), which runs from January 22–27, 2019. During NDAFW, communities and schools hold events that give teens the scientific facts about drugs and alcohol, using NIDA’s free materials designed for teens.

Hundreds of NDAFW events are already scheduled in the United States and elsewhere. We have lots of free resources to help your community or school plan, promote, and host an NDAFW event.

To register an event, go to the NDAFW Events Registration page. For more information, visit the NDAFW website or email

I would love to ask my school to participate, however that day and week is the mid-term exam week and classes are not in session. Would this ever be done at another date during the year next time? Thank you

We’re sorry that your school will be unable to attend. Chat Day is held annually during National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week®, which is typically the third or fourth week in January. However, you can read the transcripts from past chats to see what teens have been asking NIDA:
