Upon visiting, Porche will distribute copies of the NIDA’s publication, Drugs: Shatter the Myths, along with a booklet about prescription drug abuse to students. District Attorney Sutter wants teens to understand the damage that harmful substances can cause to their developing brains and bodies so they can make informed decisions, lead healthy lives, and avoid the snare of dependency. In addition, Porche specifically seeks to address the issue among middle school students, before addiction or drug use becomes commonplace in young persons’ lives. National Drug Facts Week aligns itself with District Attorney Sutter’s prevention efforts; reducing drug abuse goes hand in hand with reducing crime. Throughout the week, the District Attorney’s Office will also engage members of the community in learning more about drug abuse through their social media outlets. Information can be found by searching for ‘Bristol County District Attorney’ on Facebook or by following ‘DASamSutter’ on Twitter.

Here is what I have organized thus far for next week’s events: Monday-Friday: Daily Reading I was hoping I could substitute a startling DRUG fact for you to read over the morning announcement, maybe in lieu of the daily reading? I have compiled some data and facts that I think students and staff maybe will be surprised about. Monday-Friday: Staff Informational I am going to send out through the week to HMS staff, informational tidbits that they might be aware of such as the email I shared with you yesterday involving marijuana candy, that is starting to make it’s presence felt in the fox cities. Monday-Thurs.: “Lunch and Learns” (Myth Vs. Fact) I am going to do some interactive questioning of the students at their lunch table (3 questions per day), and ask them to answer with a MYTH or FACT card that will be placed at their table. An example of a question might be: Is it possible that a prescription drug could be illegal at school??? Answer: Yes, if the person taking the drug does not match the prescription. Friday: DON’T BE A DUMMY, BE A SMARTIE At lunch students will have the opportunity to take a drug free pledge, and place it on the signs that were designed by SMAC. In exchange students may select a candy to coincide with their pledge. This will be done with the help from SMAC members. My mail goal is to create an ongoing awareness in our building, and I think the above will create that. Please let me know if you have suggestions.
