Student looking at computerThe Shoutout is gathering volume and the message is coming through loud and clear: JUST THINK TWICE!

  • Myth: If I smoke cigarettes now and then, I won’t get addicted.
    • Think twice: Each puff of a cigarette gives a smoker about 1 to 2 milligrams of nicotine.  Although that may not seem like much, it is enough to make someone addicted. bit.ly/cvgZvd
  • Myth: Huffing – like sniffing Sharpies or household cleaners – really doesn’t do anything bad; just gives me a quick high.
    • Think twice: In the short term, these chemicals can cause dizziness, loss of consciousness, bad mood swings, and headaches.  In the long term, toxic fumes can take the place of oxygen in the blood, which can damage your brain and other organs. bit.ly/b8ry8k
  • Myth: Prescription drugs can’t be dangerous if a doctor prescribes them.
    • Think twice ADHD medications like Adderall can cause increased heart rate and blood pressure, psychosis, and seizures if they’re abused; pain medications like Vicodin can cause respiratory depression and arrest, and even death, particularly when combined with alcohol. http://bit.ly/djfjGi

Hello, this is nice information especially to young children who often mingle with the surrounding environments, the presence of hazardous substances contained in cigarettes or drugs, we can anticipate before trying it [commercial link removed, per guidelines]

wow. I didn’t know that about just one cigarette! No one wonder so many people get addicted so easliy. Why don’t they put stuff like this where teens can see it BEFORE they start doing this stuff instead of after?

  7. Cici says:

Having so many things people can get addicted to these days, Im scared. Im not shocked that anything people may find pleasing could make them addicted. Food, drugs, SHARPIES??! Its outragous! Everyone is in danger!

  8. Harper says:

This article is so helpful because most people don’t even realize that you can get addicted to smoking, huffing, etc so fast. Huffing is one of the worst listed, because when you huff (sniff) things, then the particles in the stuff you sniff, you can actually kill your brain cells and mess up your nervous system. And smoking is much more worse, the nicotine is what makes ciggarettes so addictive, 1-2 milligrams is actually a lot, you smoke 1 ciggerette and you’ll most likely want another one. But all in all, you should think twice before you start doing all this, because you’re basically hurting yourself without even knowing it.

This passage explains what happens in a situation and then describes what you do when you think twice in that situation. I think when you do smoke cigarettes every now and then you do get addicted to it.

This passage explains what happens in a situation and then describes what you do when you think twice in that situation. I think when you do smoke cigarettes every now and then you do get addicted to it, because it gets into your lungs and you can’t stop smoking them.

Iagee to the things about sniffing household cleaners. It can kill people and make them feel a little dizzy so think twice before you decide to sniff household cleaners.

  12. Nikki Boo says:

YES PLEASE THINK FIRST BEFORE TAKING A PUFF OF ANY DRUG. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET ADDICTED AND EITHER RUIN YOUR LIFE OR BE IN A REHAB CENTER SOMEWHERE. SO YOUNG TEENS ALWAYS SAY NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TO NASTY DRUGS THEY WILL KILL YOU.. THINK ABOUT IT

  13. John F. Kennedy says:

Addiction is only a replacement to a deeper problem in most people. Until the real problem is resolved, addicted will always be there in some form.

  14. Netmark says:

Drinking and drug use remain a factor in teenage highway fatalities in 2008, 31 percent of drivers age 15 to 20 who were killed in motor vehicle crashes had been drinking or drug impared; 25 percent were alcohol-impaired, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher. Researchers from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation say that laws banning the purchase or possession of alcohol by people under the age of 21 and banning the use of false identification to buy alcohol have reduced the ratio of drinking to nondrinking drivers involved in fatal accidents by 11 percent and 7 percent, respectively. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that numerous studies since the 1970s show that when the drinking age is lowered, more people die in crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 714 lives of young people ages 18, 19 and 20 were saved by the minimum drinking age laws in 2008. Since 1975 about 27,052 lives have been saved by these laws. [commercial link removed, per guidelines]
